Nutrients Help Kids Get Off To A Healthy Start

As we near the end of this month in which we honor mothers, it seems appropriate to look at two studies that considered the potential of supporting newborns’ health.

Lutein In Moms and Babies

The newborn brain needs lutein for healthy growth, and lutein also improves vision and protects the eyes in infants and adults. In this study, 89 women who had given birth in the past four to six weeks to a full-term baby, and who were successfully breastfeeding, took 6 mg or 12 mg of lutein per day, or a placebo.

After six weeks, compared to placebo, lutein concentrations in breast milk were more than double for the low-dose lutein group, and more than triple for the high-dose lutein group. Circulating levels of lutein in the infants were two to three times higher than placebo for the low- and high-dose lutein groups, respectively. Doctors suggest breastfeeding women consume enough lutein to help ensure infants develop healthy brains and eyesight.

Coconut Oil Relieved Eczema

Some newborns have a genetic tendency toward allergy, with dermatitis, also known as eczema, an early sign that asthma or hay fever may follow. In this study, 117 children with mild to moderate eczema applied virgin coconut oil to the skin twice per day, or applied mineral oil as a placebo.

After eight weeks, eczema symptoms decreased in severity 38 percent for placebo and 68 percent for coconut oil. The children who used coconut oil also had much more hydrated skin and, while nearly half the kids in the placebo group had not improved, almost half of those in the coconut oil group saw moderate improvement and half saw major improvement with coconut oil.
